How Did Jesus Empty Himself?

(How Did Jesus Empty Himself?) Bible Question.

“Paul says Jesus emptied Himself and took the form of a servant. How empty did He become? Did He had to learn everything like other people from childhood to adulthood?”

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men – Philippians 2:5 – 7 (New American Standard Bible)

The idea of Jesus emptying Himself is found in a passage that teaches us about selfishness and putting others first. Clearly, the idea has to do with Jesus’ right to status and majesty as God’s son. That is, Jesus emptied Himself of all He deserved. He was God’s Son, but did not cling to that. Instead He gave up all of His rights and died for humankind. He emptied Himself by taking human form (instead of His heavenly glory) and serving the needs of unworthy people.

The point of Paul’s teaching is that we, too (as Christians), are to surrender our rights. We are to put others ahead of ourselves. We are to empty ourselves of pride, status and privilege in the process of serving others.
