Woman Saved Through Child Bearing?

(Woman Saved Through Child Bearing?) Bible Question.

Question:

“Please explain 1 Timothy 2:15. Does this mean that a woman must have children in order to be saved?”

Answer:

A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.(1 Timothy 2:11 – 15 , New American Standard Bible)

This verse must be considered in its context. The apostle Paul has spent the first eight verses of this chapter explaining the role of men in public worship. But, beginning in verse 9, he turns to discuss the role of women. While men are to take the lead, women are to “learn in quietness and full submission” (verse 11). The women’s role is not in the worship leadership. Paul then finishes with the above statement.

First, “childbearing” is much more than just giving birth. It carries with it the idea of nurturing and child raising, not just child-bearing. Second, the teaching for women is in contrast to the teaching for men. Men are to serve by praying and leading in worship. Women are to serve by being nurturers and parents.

Paul is not saying a woman must give birth in order for her to be saved. He taught the Corinthian church that it would be good for them to remain single (1 Corinthians 7:25ff).  For Christians to be single and remain unmarried would prevent them from having children. Paul knew that not everyone should be married so that some would not have children.

What Paul is saying is simple. Men (as a general rule) are to lead the public prayers . . .

Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension. (1 Timothy 2:8)

Men are to take the lead in worship. But this would not imply that a man must lead a public prayer or teach publicly in order to be saved. It only means that the role of men is to lead in the public services of the church.

Women too have a role. In general, this role is the rearing and nurturing of children. While some in the first century might look down on the role of women raising children (as some do today), Paul elevates it to a high status. Women are not to feel inferior because their role is different. It is a vital thing to raise godly children. Women have the greatest impact in this process.

Simply stated, Paul is drawing the contrast between what women (in general) are to do for the kingdom, and  what men (in general) are to do.
