(What Are These Idle Words?) Bible Question.
“What are the idle words Jesus says we will be called to account for?”
“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil. But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”– Matthew 12:33 – 37 (New American Standard Bible)
Jesus is speaking of the heart of a person as the source of a person’s actions, whether good or bad. His warning is simple: even the idle or careless words will be judged by God. Why? Because they reveal what is in the heart as well as those carefully thought-out words.
Jesus is warning us that what we say in casual conversation is just as revealing of our hearts (and therefore our righteousness or wickedness) as is what we say in prepared or guarded situations. The issue is what is in your character. What you say in casual (or careless) conversation will reveal your heart. In the final analysis, it is the heart which our speech reveals that will judge us before God.
