When (How) Does Life Begin? When Does One Have a Soul? Bible Question.
“I believe that life begins at conception. How does God miraculously impart to each human being an eternal soul? At what point does one have a soul?”
“Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7; New American Standard Bible)
The Bible tells us that a human being is just dust until God breathes into him or her the breath of life. It is God who creates life. In Psalm 104 the psalmist speaks of God’s creative power throughout the creation. Finally, he says . . .
“When you hide your face,
they are terrified;
when you take away their breath,
they die and return to the dust.
When you send your Spirit,
they are created,
and you renew the face of the ground.”
– Psalm 104:29, 30 (New International Version)
The author informs us that it is the presence of God that allows life to exist. When God’s Spirit is sent out, then life is created. I cannot answer in general terms or in specifics how God does this. I don’t know. But it is God who creates and sustains life. “nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things” (Acts 17:25, NASB)
It is God who gives, not just life, but breath and everything else. Nothing on earth can live or will live without the presence and care of Almighty God. Therefore, “for in Him we live and move and exist . . .” (Acts 17:28a).
I agree that life begins at conception. I believe it is right that God’s Spirit that generates the unique character and nature of the individual to be born nine months later. That life comes from God and belongs to God.
When does one have a soul? The Scripture give no definite answer, but they do provide information for us to know some things for certain. God told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations“ (Jeremiah 1:5). God knew Jeremiah and had a plan for him before he was born, in fact before he was formed in the womb.
It seems to me that once the woman has conceived, at that point, the individual characteristics of that particular person is created and, like Jeremiah, is a person in God’s eyes. I believe that the soul begins when the person does.
